Living in United States
Rent, health cover and ways to get residency for a foreign retiree in United States, checked 2026-09-26.
Rent for a one-bedroom flat
| City | Centre | Outside centre |
|---|
| Miami | $2,786 | $2,171 |
| New York | $4,438 | $3,033 |
| Austin | $1,924 | $1,288 |
Rents vary more between US cities than within most other countries on this list. Miami comes first because Florida, like the tax model, has no state income tax.
Healthcare
Before Medicare at 65, early retirees usually buy an ACA marketplace plan. Subsidies depend on income, and the enhanced credits ended after 2025.
- Benchmark silver plan, age 40, US average: $625 a month
- Same plan in New York: $817 a month
Residency routes
- No retirement visa (Non-citizens): The US has no visa for living off savings. Routes are work, family, or investment.
- E-2 treaty investor (Citizens of treaty countries, including Sweden): A substantial investment in a US business you run. Renewable, but not a green card.
- EB-5 investor green card (Anyone): US$800,000 in a targeted employment area or US$1,050,000 elsewhere. Expected to rise in 2027.
Tax on a portfolio
- Single filer, federal tax only. Assumes long-term gains and qualified dividends.
- US citizens and green-card holders are taxed on worldwide income wherever they live.
- Holding non-US funds (e.g. European UCITS ETFs) as a US person triggers punitive PFIC rules.
